Summer Reading List!!

Over the coming 4 Months I have A LOT going on but like many, I really enjoy taking time to sit down chill out and engross myself in a really good book. While I’m preparing (and attempting to not spend money) before heading off to New York in June, I have a fair sized list of

Obviously a vast majority of these books I won’t be able to take to America with me – thanks to baggage allowance – but it’s still 6 weeks until I go so i’m sure I can cut through a couple before I leave.

To begin I will re-read a number of books that I will be using to aid my Dissertation Research Project before I go away, so I can read again when I come back.

(L-R) “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” by Amy Chua, “Positive Pushing: How to Raise a Successful and Happy Child” by Jim Taylor Ph.D and “Only Hope: Coming of Age Under China’s One-Child Policy” by Vanessa L Fong.

These 3 books above have been previously read for uni but I’m looking forward to reading these again.

(L-R) “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay” by Michael Chabon, “Factory Girls: Voices From the Heart of Modern China” by Leslie T Chang and “We Need to Talk About Kevin” by Lionel Shriver.

Out of the above books I have partially read “The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay” and “Factory Girls” but never quite got round to finishing them which I am quite looking forward to this summer. “Kavalier and Clay” is the tale of two friends brought together through the woes of adolescence and refuge during the second world war who create a Comic Book. I’ve had this book since I was 15 and have never gotten round to finishing it, getting 3/4 through then starting again.

I’ve heard a lot of rave reviews about “We Need to Talk About Kevin” through friends, bloggers and even the media now that the book has been turned into a Motion Picture so was rightfully intrigued by the idea behind the book. This book tells the story of a woman who is plagued by raising her son, a child who committed a series of murders during a Massacre at School. Described as a thriller, We Need To Talk About Kevin is set to have me gripped tightly to the text from start until finish.

(L-R) “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” by Paul Torday, “The Lucky One” by Nicholas Sparks and “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett.

These 3 novels, “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”, “The Lucky One” and “The Help” have all fairly recently been made into movies which I have postponed seeing until I read the books. Nicholas Sparks happens to be one of my favourite guilty pleasure authors when I’m in the mood for a good greet.

(L-R) “The Hunger Games”, “Catching Fire” and “Mocking Jay” From The Hunger Games Series” By Suzanne Collins

    • I’m going to have a lot of downtime over the next few months with a number of flights, buses, evenings of babysitting, etc. Got to keep my brain busy otherwise I’ll go crazy! Would love to hear your thoughts on the books you have read, we could swap notes at the end of the summer.
